Through the new Engage NY ELA curriculum, Ms. Thiel’s 5th graders at Adams have been studying issues of human rights around the world. Part of their reading included a passage about Nepal called “Teaching Nepalis to Read, Plant, and Vote,” by Lesley Reed.
As an extension of their learning Ms. Thiel invited her father to be a guest speaker because he spent several years living in Nepal teaching English.
Mr. Thiel shared photos, described everyday life and school in Nepal, showed off various artifacts, and even gave every student a nametag with their name written in Nepali!
